The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Lampasas 11-1 in five innings April 8 in District 24-4A play.
“It was combination of things,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said. “Lampasas has kids who can hit, and they are a decent team.”
The Badgers (15-4-2, 8-1 second in district) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to RBI doubles by Eli Calderon and Kade Landry, a 2 RBI single from Cory White, and a RBI single by Timber Gholsen. An error and a hit by pitch resulted in the other two runs.
“Nothing egregious,” Porter said of his team. “They had a five-run inning.”
Marble Falls (10-12, 4-3 third in district) sophomore John Alan Whittle had the RBI, while freshmen Braxton Dicken and Crawford Mattox, sophomore Grant Carter and junior Canon Cochran each had a hit.
Lampasas pitcher Calvin Phelps (4-1) allowed one run off four hits without issuing a free base and struck out seven. He faced a total of 18 batters.
Pitcher Whittle allowed 8 earned runs off 8 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
“If you don’t have good stuff, good hitters make you pay for your mistakes,” Porter said. “And we can’t have multiple aspects have bad nights. (Lampasas) didn’t kick the ball around, and we had a couple of errors.”
Burnet (11-7, 3-5) shutout Jarrell (4-16, 1-5) 15-0 April 8, while Taylor (4-15-1, 2-5) slipped by Georgetown Gateway (6-12, 0-7) 8-7.
Lampasas comes to Scearce Field at Marble Falls High School at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, to conclude the series.
The Badgers are expected to start pitcher J.T. Posten, who has 57 strikeouts and gave up 21 hits, 10 walks and 4 earned runs in 37 innings.
