The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Lampasas 17-5 April 3 in a District 24-4A contest that ended in five innings.
The win means the Lady Badgers (10-12, 2-6) split the season series with the Lady Mustangs (10-12, 2-6). But Lampasas’ other district win is against Jarrell 12-10 April 1. Those victories put the Lady Badgers firmly in the conversation for finishing fourth in the district race and advancing to the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Marble Falls simply must find a way to get a win to snap a six-game losing streak in district.
“They came in off their win from Jarrell,” head coach Alex Lozyoa said. “Between us, them and Jarrell, Lampasas has it in their hands. We had Taylor Tuesday (April 1) and needed to get a win. (Lampasas) came in excited, they came in motivated.”
The Lady Badgers led from the start, plating 2 runs in the first inning, 5 in the second highlighted by 2 home runs, 3 in the third, and 5 in the fourth. Their 17 runs came off 18 hits.
Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs scored a run in the second and in the third innings and three in the fourth.
“In the first inning, they rolled in a bunch of ground balls,” Lozoya said. “Kudos to them for coming in extremely motivated.”
Still, he pointed out his team scored three runs in the fourth, which showed its unwillingness to go down without a fight.
“They had their chance to give up,” the coach said. “The bottom of our lineup came through. They found a way.”
Marble Falls used both freshman pitchers during the contest beginning with Brooklynn Damico.
Lozoya said Damico pitched well enough to give the Lady Mustangs a chance. But the defense must make plays for its pitchers, which means being faster to balls hit in different parts of the field, diving at balls that are hit between infielders, and making every routine out by making accurate throws to first base.
If the Lady Mustangs behind the pitchers can’t make those plays look easy, it’s incredibly difficult to get a win.
“All the elements of our game have to be on,” he said. “We’re going to have to make some effort.”
Lampasas senior pitcher Brooklyn Farmer earned the win by allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out five.
“I thought she threw well,” the coach said. “We were attacking the ball. Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize when bases were loaded. The kids went up there more confident and attacked the pitches.”
Sophia Biagini and Khloe Hollingsworth each had one RBI off two hits, while Jocelyn Suarez, Callie Phillips and Riley Frisch each had a hit.
Marble Falls welcomes Salado Tuesday, April 8, and Burnet Friday, April 11, before playing at Jarrell Tuesday, April 15, to end the regular season. All games start at 7 p.m.
“We have three games left,” Lozoya said. “That’s why you go two times through a round robin.”
