The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 6-3 April 1 in District 24-4A play.

With the Lady Gators (16-1-2, 6-1) leading 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Mustangs looked to make the most of their final at-bat.

The result was a RBI by Sophia Biagini and a 2 RBI single by Riley Frisch with two outs. The game ended with Marble Falls having two runners on base.

Gateway scored two runs in the first inning, a score that stood until they plated three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya commended freshman pitcher Brooklyn Damico for her work in the circle. She allowed three earned runs off five hits. In all Gateway had eight hits.

“She had a good night,” he said. “Allowing eight hits against a lineup like theirs is a good night. She gave us a chance to make plays. We were doing a good job of getting outs.”

He noted senior infielder Kylie Roberts was tough defensively.

“Every ball that was hit to her she made a play on,” he said. “I told Brooklynn she owed Kylie lunch.

The Lady Gators were led by senior pitcher Chloe Ellis.

“Chloe was on,” Lozoya said. “Our kids did a great job. We were trying to make adjustments on the fly against Chloe. The kids did great making the adjustments.”

One of the questions Lozoya and his staff had was whether the Lady Mustangs could make sure the 9-6 loss to Taylor March 28 wouldn’t affect the outcome against Gateway. He was pleased to see that it didn’t because his players didn’t allow a run in the second, third and fourth innings to give themselves a chance.

Lozoya said he has told the players the reason he wants to see this team get in the postseason is because he appreciates their willingness to work hard and sacrifice their personal goals for the betterment of the team. He said he’d much rather have another few days of practice instead of asking them to turn in their uniforms right after Easter.

“I am glad there was no residue from the Taylor game at least as far as our competitive spirits go,” he said. “We genuinely have some good young adults. I want to spend another week with them.”

Marble Falls welcomes Lampasas at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4.

The Lady Badgers (10-12, 2-6) are entering the contest after beating Jarrell (6-16-2, 3-5) 12-10 April 1.

Salado (19-4, 8-0) is first in the district standings after beating Burnet (9-10-1, 5-3) 3-0, which is in third place. Gateway is in second place and will return to Burnet County to face the Lady Dawgs April 4. Salado is at Taylor on the same night.
