The Marble Falls High School softball team defeated Elgin 11-3 March 25 in non-district play.
After Elgin scored a run in the second inning, the Lady Mustangs answered with a run in the third inning, another in the fourth and three in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Cheyenne Thompson had “the big hits,” which were triples.
“Cheyenne put a good barrel on the ball that went down the right field line,” head coach Alex Lozoya said. “It was good for her confidence and everyone else’s.”
Though Callie Phillips had only one hit, Lozoya said her adjustment at the plate made a difference with her teammates.
Thompson and Kylie Roberts each had 2 hits and 2 RBI followed by a RBI from Sophia Biagini, Natalie Bertino and Jocelyn Suarez.
Marble Falls struck out 10 times.
“We helped her,” Lozoya said. “Then we started working into deep counts. As the game went on, the at-bats made her work.”
Pitcher Brooklynn Damico picked up the win. She allowed 2 earned runs off 4 hits with 4 walks and a strikeout in seven innings.
Lozoya said he thought about pulling her late in the game but decided against it because she was pitching so well, adding she was “doing a good job of hitting her spots.”
“I think it started in the fifth where it was three up, three down, three up, three down, three up, three down,” he said. “She was being efficient. Why not let her go the whole game? The last inning, she gave up a couple of runs, but most of it was when she already had two outs. The offense gave her a cushion.”
The win came at a good time, he said, since the Lady Mustangs (2-4) are in fifth place in the District 24-4A standings. Salado (6-0) is in first place followed by Georgetown Gateway (5-1), Burnet (4-2) and Jarrell (3-3).
“I’m very appreciative to have picked up a game before we move back into district,” he said. “Overall, I thought it was a good night for the Lady Mustangs.”
Marble Falls begins the second round of district play with a 7 p.m. road trip to Taylor Friday, March 28.
