The Marble Falls High School boys golf team is the District 24-4A runner-up thanks to shooting a two-day total of 673 at the district tournament March 24-25 at Legends Golf Course.

This is the third consecutive year Marble Falls is advancing to the Class 4A Region III tournament, which is April 16-17 at Bearkat Golf Course in Huntsville.

“It feels great,” head coach Adley Canales said. “The expectation is that’s where they should be. The end (of the season) is not district anymore. Pressure is a privilege. We’re extremely pleased with what they did. We look forward to regionals.”

The Mustangs were in second place after the first day total of 330 and ended the tournament with a 343.

“Our goal on day one was to put ourselves in position to be able to compete for a chance to advance,” Canales said. “We did that. So on day one, we were in second place. Our goal on day two was to play smarter and maintain our position so we could advance as a team to regionals. They played well, and we were able to execute our plan. We knew what we were capable of. Our goal was to play at the level. The results aren’t shocking to us.”

Camilo Montez led with a 77-78–155 followed by Porter Vinson’s 81-80–161, Ross Oelschleger scored an 85-85–169, and John Srnensky had an 88-100–188. Beckett Berkman scored a 104-104–208.

In the individual standings, Montez was the district second medalist, while Vinson finished fifth and Oelschleger was sixth.

“Three returning varsity members,” the coach said. “They knew what to do.”

Srnensky, a true freshman, played well, Canales said.

“This was his first varsity tournament, and he performed well,” he said. “He showed consistency and the ability to play at a level to help the varsity team.”

Lampasas won the title thanks to scoring a 329-327–656. After the first round, the Badgers had a one-stroke lead over the Mustangs.

Burnet finished with a 369-359–728. The Bulldogs were led by Hays Bennett, who shot an 89-81–170 to finish as the second medalist and advance to regionals as an individual. Other team members were Dylan Courtney with an 88-93-181, Brady Hernandez with a 96-97–193, Hayden Cox with a 96-98–194 and Shane Ikonen with a 106-88–194.

The Lady Mustangs finished third in the team standings thanks to shooting a 402-398–800.

“They shot their season best on day one and beat it on day two,” Canales said. “Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. The girls gave it their best. That’s all we can ask.”

They were paced by Lily Stein, who shot a 97-101–198 to finish as the second individual alternate.

“She shot her season best,” the coach said. “It’s a great time for it.”

Other members included Cali Brydon with a 99-100–199, Kate McCary scored a104-96–200, Tessie Bowen had a 102-101–203, and Gwyneth Fletcher finished with a 125-120-245.

Lampasas is the district champion thanks to scoring a 337-339–676 followed by Salado, which shot a 373-354–727.

Consistency, Canales said, is the key to victory in golf.

“We preach one shot at a time,” he said. “Golf is a game of misses. It’s who can manage the misses the best will have the most success. We don’t put too much pressure on one single shot. You may have a bad day, but you can turn it around.”

Burnet’s Avery Gowin shot a 91-89–180 to finish as the first medalist. Davis Boorman shot a 117-108–225 and Kristine Rodriguez scored a 120-106–226.

“(We) played a better second day of golf and bettered themselves by a total of 25 strokes,” head coach Doug Messer said. “I was extremely proud of them for keeping their focus and competing against good competition.”
