The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Burnet 11-0 in five innings March 18 in District 24-4A play.

The Lady Dawgs (2-2) were led by senior pitcher Presley Crawford, who struck out 15 Lady Mustangs and allowed only one hit and two walks. A third runner reached on an error.

“What we learned today is that we’re a team that’s wanting to learn and get better,” Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya said. “Today we learned that against a good pitcher, you’re going to have to find a way. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s me.”

The Lady Dawgs capitalized on the Lady Mustangs’ mishaps that included fielding and throwing errors and even an error on a tag. Lozoya said it was the right technical call, pointing out the rule allows the defender to tag the runner who is leaving one base to head to another to be tagged with the ball in her hand or with the glove with the ball inside but not with the ball inside the glove and the other hand on the glove. Umpires told a Lady Dawg, who was out at first on a routine throw to bat, again because the infielder didn’t hold the ball long enough before throwing it to a teammate.

Needless to say, the game was about learning the rulebook as opposed to seeing the playbook. Burnet scored 2 runs in the first inning, 4 in the second, 2 in the third and 4 in the fourth.

One run in the third inning was an infield home run by sophomore Lacie Lewis, who ran the bases after a throwing error.

“Hopefully we’ve learned something about ourselves and realize we’re moving in the right direction,” Lozoya said. “We still have a ways to go to see if we can reset and re-engage. It starts with me. I have to make sure we keep it going.”

Marble Falls will have to regroup in a hurry. The Lady Mustangs welcome Jarrell Wednesday, March 19, with the junior varsity playing at noon and the varsity at 2 p.m. to end the first round of district play.

“We can’t let this (Burnet loss) be a heavy hangover,” the coach said. “We have to reset and take care of our home field.”
