The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Geronimo Navarro 7-2 Feb. 25.
Grant Carter “hit a ball hard” and “reached on an error.” That brought in the two runs in the fifth inning.
“They’re good,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said of the Panthers. “We played them in a tournament a few years ago. They had some dudes. Their last two (pitchers) threw in the 80s.”
Navarro’s Ryan Davidson struck out 8 in 4 innings. He didn’t allow a hit and only issued one free base, a walk.
“They’re very good,” Porter said. “(Their last one) touched 90 mph.”
Offensively, the Panthers had 6 hits and took advantage of some free bases. In one inning, Navarro drew 2 walks and another batter was hit by a pitch. Two other batters hit singles to score runs.
“We had more walks,” Porter said. “Take those away, it’s a 4-1 game. If (our pitchers) get ahead (in the count), good things start to happen.”
The Mustangs are still creating their pitching rotation and are trying to figure out where each arm can best benefit the team, the coach said.
“Some guys needed innings,” he said. “We saw some good stuff.”
One was sophomore Casey Layton, who threw 9 strikes in 11 pitches.
“They had good command overall,” Porter said. “They played good, solid defense. We have four freshmen we’re starting. Every game they play, they get better.”
Porter said he knew Navarro would provide a solid challenge to his players, which is why he scheduled the Panthers.
“The big takeaway is we’re still doing well,” he said. “I’m trying to play the best competition we can find.”
Marble Falls will compete at the Llano Independent School District Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1.
The Mustangs play in a doubleheader Thursday against Bulverde Bracken at 3:30 p.m. and Fredericksburg at 6 p.m., both at Bulldog Diamonds on the Burnet High School campus.
They face Texas Military Institute at noon Friday, and finish against Wimberley at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, both at Llano High School.
