The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team lost to Canyon Lake 1-0 Feb. 18 in District 26-4A play.

The lone goal was scored midway through the second half on a corner kick.

“We cleared it out of the box,” Marble Falls head coach Marisa Miller said. “Because of the wind, it didn’t go as far. We cleared it right at their feet, and they scored. We weren’t as marked up as we should have been.”

That means the shooter saw a big enough opening to find the back of the net without a Lady Mustang standing in between.

“(The Lady Hawks) are as good as we thought,” she added. “It was very evenly matched. It was windy. We didn’t take advantage of it as much as we should have, and they did.”

The game was played as the arctic weather was making its way through central Texas.

“Freezing,” the coach said of the conditions. “It was bitterly cold. The wind was very strong. Though it played a factor, we’re learning we have to push through it. Canyon Lake did a better job of playing through the cold.”

Currently Marble Falls is in fifth place in the district standings with the first round ending against Bandera. The game was moved to Tuesday, Feb. 25, to avoid the freezing cold temperatures that are expected Friday, Feb. 21. The home matches begin with the junior varsity at 5 p.m. and the varsity follows.

Wimberley is in first place followed by San Antonino Davenport, Canyon Lake and Fredericksburg. But the Lady Mustangs (1-3) beat the Lady Billies (1-2-1) 3-0. Soccer uses a point system to determine standings where points are awarded for wins and ties.

“We have to take care of business against Bandera,” Miller said. “We have a whole second round. We have to be better. We talked about how we need to compete better and put in more work on our side.”
