The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team lost to San Antonio Davenport 6-1 Feb. 14 in District 26-4A play.

“We knew Davenport was going to be strong,” Lady Mustangs head coach Marisa Miller said. “They were close against Wimberley. I don’t think we were ready to play.”

The Lady Wolves raced to a 5-0 lead in the first half.

Freshman Jill Cole scored the Lady Mustangs’ lone goal where “she put it over the goalie’s head.”

“The goalie came out pretty far,” Miller said.

Miller was pleased to see her players respond differently in the second half by tightening up on defense and not allowing multiple goals.

One big key coaches have been harping on with the players is getting them to understand they must play a full 80 minutes to have a chance at a win. And that means being mentally and emotionally engaged before the first kickoff.

“We do have a lot of players who are on the varsity for the first time,” Miller said. “A lot is learning the way you have to play all 80 minutes or this will happen in a couple of games. You let up for even a second, they’re going to put a bunch of goals in.”

The Lady Mustangs (8-6-1, 1-2) travel to play at Canyon Lake (8-4-2, 1-0-2) Tuesday, Feb. 18, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

Miller said there aren’t easy opponents in this district, pointing out the Lady Hawks played Wimberley (13-1-1, 2-0-1) to a 0-0 tie Feb. 14.

“We have to come ready to play and learn from our mistakes,” she said.
