The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team played San Antonio Davenport to a 2-2 tie Feb. 14 in District 26-4A play.
The Mustangs (8-5-2) were down 1-0 at the half on a shot that came off a block by the goalie and 2-0 midway through the second half. The second goal was scored on a penalty kick in transition.
The play began on the other end when Davenport “packed the box” defensively. A Mustang was knocked down and Davenport got the ball and raced to the other end.
“We played really well,” Mustangs head coach Ryan Craven said. “Their first goal was kind of a fluke. Our goalie made a big save, and we didn’t clean it up. It chipped over the goalie’s head.”
Senior Marco Almazan scored to trim the deficit in half with 18 minutes left to play.
In the final six minutes, junior Joaquin Aguilar was fouled in the box, which gave Marble Falls a penalty kick. Almazan made the Wolves pay by finding the back of the net.
Marble Falls was without two starters and its leading scorer.
This is the second game in a row where Almazan has scored at least two goals.
“Marco got it going every game,” the coach said. “With us having guys out, he’s stepped up a little bit. He saw that his defense needed to improve in order for us to take the next step. His defense in the second half was his best defensive game of the year. He did much better against Davenport.”
All five of Marble Falls’ losses have been by a goal. To Craven, however, most of the matches in the district will be decided by one goal because of the parity.
“We have to find a way to win those close games,” he said.
Fredericksburg is the district leader at 3-0 followed by Davenport at 2-0-1 and Marble Falls at 1-1-1.
Marble Falls welcomes Canyon Lake (0-3) Tuesday, Feb. 18, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow. Fredericksburg and Davenport play Feb. 18.
