The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team shut out Fredericksburg 3-0 Feb. 11 in District 26-4A play.

Goals came from freshman Jill Cole and juniors AvaMcNamara and Ruby Carrillo. Carrillo scored on a ball that was initially blocked.

“Jill and Ava both scored on big kicks from the 40(-yard line),” head coach Marisa Miller said. “For two defenders to be able to do that back to back was good.”

The Lady Mustangs (8-5-1, 1-1) had challenges before the match: a scheduling change put varsity playing first at 5 p.m., wet conditions and a road trip. They still came out victorious.

“It speaks volumes about our team and able to overcome challenges,” Miller said. “They came on as fierce and ready as I’ve watched them. That says something about the girls and their drive.”

The victory comes on the heels of a 5-0 loss to Wimberley Feb. 7 to begin district play.

The coach pointed out the contest was 1-0 for a long time.

“(The Texanns) are very talented, they are very fast, they have very good team chemistry,” the coach said. “We held them to 1-0 at the half. We played well. They were very aggressive. Their endurance won out.”

Miller said the Lady Mustangs learned more about their own team chemistry and field of play during the contest.

“I’m very proud of them for not getting discouraged about our loss,” the coach said. “We learned from it and moved on to the next one.”

After two matches, Marble Falls and San Antonio Davenport are tied for third at 1-1 in the district standings with Wimberley (13-1, 2-0) in first and Fischer Canyon Lake is second at 1-0-1.

“(The Fredericksburg win) was very important for us,” Miller said. “Fredericksburg tied Canyon Lake. Fredericksburg was state ranked (by the Texas Girls Coaches Association), they had a great record. We’ve been talking about us being able to compete. Let’s prove we can be top contenders in this district. We proved a point with our win.”

Marble Falls welcomes Davenport Friday, Feb. 14, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
