The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team defeated Austin San Juan Diego 96-59 Jan. 31 after beating San Marcos Academy 75-35 Jan. 27.
The Flames (18-10, 8-1) remain in second place in District 4-3A of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
Senior forward Asher Apel led the Flames with 38 points during the win against San Juan Diego, while all-state sophomore guard Will Slyker added 33.
What made the win against San Marcos Academy even more impressive is the Flames played without junior center Judah Phillips, who was ill.
“We knew it would be tough,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “The guys played great defense.”
Slyker scored 45 points, a new personal record, which tied the program’s record for most points scored in a game. He shares it with another great Flame, Brock Davis.
“What surprises me is when Will misses,” Revelle joked. “He works hard and is constantly in the gym. He’s an example of hard work paying off. He’s a great teammate.”
He recalled how happy the Flames were for junior guard Jase Marshall, who scored eight points during the win against San Antonio Keystone, and celebrated that with him. Slyker had 41 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists during the contest.
“They’re for each other, and no one cares who gets credit,” Revelle said. “That’s also a really good thing for teams to have. We have no egos and a lot of humble kids.”
Faith travels to play at San Antonio Lutheran Tuesday, Feb. 4, then the Flames welcome Waco Live Oak Friday Feb. 7. The junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m., the girls varsity at 6 p.m., and the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. In between the two home varsity games, seniors Hadley Shipley and Apel will be honored.
Currently Live Oak, which is ranked No. 1 in the TAPPS Class 3A poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, is a game ahead of the Flames in the district standings. Faith is ranked No. 2 in the state poll.
