Burnet boys soccer loses to Eastside
The Burnet High School boys soccer team lost to Austin Eastside Early College 4-1 Jan. 27 in District 25-4A play.
The Panthers took a quick 3-0 lead “before we conceded to parking the bus and playing defense,” Burnet head coach Benjamin Boorman said.
“Varsity started the game in an attacking sense trying to push forward and quickly learned that this was not going to be possible against this team,” he said. “Once we (began playing defense), we got a few counter attack chances that turned into corner (kicks), free kicks and shots on target. We definitely frustrated the other team as they found it very difficult to score with our defensive structure.”
That allowed the Bulldogs to regroup offensively. Just before halftime, Hector Arredondo got a through ball to Miguel Valdez, who was tackled in the box after the defender missed the ball.
Arredondo was awarded a penalty kick and scored to trim the deficit to 3-1 at the half.
Burnet was “much more disciplined” in the second half, Boorman said. Cleto Leon almost scored in the second half on a fast break, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Arredondo was the Man of the Match, while Rigo Valdez was the Junkyard Dawg.
“I know the boys will be ready when they come to Burnet,” Boorman said.
Burnet welcomes Jarrell Tuesday, Jan. 28, the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
“This will be a close game and will help decide playoff contention,” the coach said.
