Burnet girls basketball defeats Taylor
The Burnet High School girls basketball team crushed Taylor 52-37 Jan. 10 in District 24-4A play.
The Lady Dawgs (11-14, 2-1) established their dominance in the first period by dropping 19 points and keeping the Lady Ducks to 6 points. They added to the advantage to race to a 27-9 lead at the intermission.
That allowed head coach Doug Messer to substitute freely throughout the second half.
He noted his players drove to the basket, which gave them the option to shoot or pass.
“We had a lot of assists to posts and rebounds,” the coach said. “If we could get it to them, they were clearing it up and rebounding.”
Burnet was led by freshman center Emma Hashbarger, who scored 17 points.
Messer noted Hashbarger “plays a lot of basketball,” especially with her dad, who helps train her.
“He’s done a good job,” he said. “I think she has great teammates. I think she has girls who build her up and joke with her. They’ve opened their arms to her. She doesn’t want to let them down. She’s going to work extremely hard to get better.”
Every Lady Dawg except one scored during the contest.
“Our goal was to get on them and not let their crowd get behind them,” Messer said. “We played well. We played with a lot of energy. We smiled and laughed – that’s big.”
Burnet welcomes Jarrell (22-5, 3-0) Tuesday, Jan. 14, with the subvarsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
