The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team finished its own tournament Dec. 20-21 with a 2-1 record.

The Flames (11-9) defeated Austin Regents 48-41 and New Braunfels Christian 56-53 but lost to Round Rock Brentwood Christian 51-38.

Head coach Zakk Revelle said beating Regents was significant considering the his team lost to the Knights 56-53 days earlier and that NBC “is a solid (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) team.”

“On day one, we showed a lot of mental focus,” he said. “They were ready to roll. New Braunfels Christian plays a different style.”

Not wanting to allow all-state sophomore guard Will Slyker to get going, the Wildcats double-teamed him.

The Flames trailed in the fourth quarter and were behind in the final 3 minutes of the contest before they rallied.

“We were making shots and plays when we needed to,” Revelle said.

NBC missed a shot at the horn from mid court.

The coach chuckled at the notion that the loss to Brentwood Christian was because of playing three games in two days.

“These are 15-to-18-year-old boys,” he said. “They can go a little farther than their minds say. We also were in a zone the whole time. It can muddy up games.”

The Bears took a 17-7 lead after the first period. And though the Flames played them fairly evenly the rest of the contest, they couldn’t overcome the results of the opening stanza.

“They shot the ball extremely well,” Revelle said of the Bears in the first quarter. “They hit four or five 3-pointers. Credit to Brentwood. They’re well coached, they’re a good team. They were locked in and ready to go.”

Faith Academy begins District 4-3A at San Antonio Keystone Saturday, Jan. 4. The Lady Flames take the court at 1:30 and the Flames follow.

“We’re ready for district,” Revelle said.
