Now that scrimmage season has ended, the Marble Falls High School boys soccer team will play begin the season in one of the most competitive tournaments in the state.

The Mustangs will compete in the Governor’s Cup hosted by Georgetown Independent School District Thursday-Friday, Jan. 2-4.

Marble Falls faces Georgetown High at 6:10 p.m. Thursday at Birkelbach Field followed by Leander Rouse at 8 p.m. Friday and Pflugerville Weiss at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, both at Georgetown East View.

New head coach Ryan Craven will be making his debut. Because of the holiday, a couple of players aren’t competing in the tournament. So the rotations will be adjusted accordingly, and that will allow him to see different combinations of Mustangs.

“More than anything, I want to see us play well,” he said. “I want to see us defend and finish when we have the opportunity to. We’re a little banged up, and we’re trying to get healthy.”

Last season Marble Falls won all three of its tournament contests. But that roster had several returners who have since graduated. Still, Craven considers 2025 to be reload thanks to the junior varsity posting a 19-0-2 record. The coach believes several of the junior varsity players were good enough to start on other squads as underclassmen. Preparations during the last few weeks simply confirm his belief.

“I feel like we’ll be in good shape early on,” he said. “We had a couple of scrimmages in mid December we did well.”

He has every confidence in the starting 11. The challenge now is to continue developing quality depth throughout the roster, and Craven beliefs a strong pre-district schedule will aid in that goal.

“Basically our starting 11 didn’t get scored on in 25-minute halves,” he said of the scrimmages. “We have a lot of solid players who can help us tremendously.”

After the mandatory five-day break for the holiday, the Mustangs conducted a practice Dec. 30 and will have more leading up to the tournament. Craven said there’s excitement to return to the pitch and that the serious Mustangs never really took a break.

“They’ve been working on their own during the break,” he said.
