The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team defeated Whitney 38-20 Dec. 14 to end the Waco Robinson Tournament.

The Lady Mustangs lost to Little Cypress-Mauriceville 41-34 Dec. 13, to West 53-19 and to Concordia Lutheran 24-18 both Dec. 12.

“I thought we played well in three of the four games,” head coach Adley Canales said. “The exception being West. The other games, we played well.”

He called the Concordia Lutheran contest a defensive battle and that a bucket separated LCM and Marble Falls until six minutes remained in the contest.

“It was back and forth,” he said. “It was a one-possession game, and we fouled them. They hit their free throws.”

The win against Whitney was highlighted by “getting a few more shots and getting rewarded with the win,” Canales said.

Despite the outcomes, the coach noted the Lady Mustangs aren’t discouraged by what’s happening offensively. That’s because they’re executing the offense and getting the second-chance opportunities that are critical to success on that end.

“They’re getting the looks,” he said. “They know it’s something we can work on. It’s easier to work on finishing than getting shots. We’ve been able to get looks and they’re not falling versus how do we get open shots?”

With two pre-district games remaining on the schedule, the Lady Mustangs now turn their attention to finishing the month strong while enjoying the Christmas holidays and all that comes with this time of the year.

Canales said he, his staff and players look forward to falling into a weekly routine that mirrors what they’ll experience during District 24-4A play.

“Now that tournaments are over, we’ll be able to get into the gym for practices,” he said. “We’ve had two practices a week for the last several weeks. We’ve had a practice on Monday, a game on Tuesday, practice on Wednesday, and tournaments Thursday, Friday and Saturday.”

That routine changes to practices Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Marble Falls is on a bye Tuesday, Dec. 17, and then travels to Fischer Canyon Lake for a 4:30 p.m. contest Friday, Dec. 20, before breaking for the holiday.
