Marble Falls boys hoops loses to Lago Vista

The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost to Lago Vista 54-49 Oct. 9 in the season opener.

The Mustangs (0-1) led 28-26 at the half.

“They went on a run in the third quarter,” Marble Falls head coach John Berkman said. “We were able to fight back. We fouled to try to get the ball back. They made their free throws.”

Despite the outcome, Berkman said he saw some good things from his team. Top of the list was the team’s defense.

“I’d give it a high B,” he said. “We did a really good job of boxing out. We did give up a few wide open shots. They had guys who could make open shots. We believe if we can hold teams to 50 or under, we’re right there. We were right there in game one.”

The Mustangs also connected on long shots – hitting ten 3-pointers during the contest. Senior guard Tidus Willie and sophomore guard Beckett Berkman each scored four 3-pointers, while seniors Isaiah Lazos and Roman Brown each added one.

“Multiple guys were making shots,” the coach said. “That’s a good sign. I thought we played well. We had a few guys in foul trouble. It’s early; it’s the first game of the year. I’m really pleased with our effort. It was a good day for us.”

Marble Falls welcomes Austin Navarro Tuesday, Nov. 12, with the junior varsity playing at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity at 8 p.m.
