The Marble Falls High School football team’s season ended in a 42-14 loss to Brownwood Nov. 8.
The Mustangs (2-8, 0-4 District 4-4A Division I) played their finest first quarter of the district season.
After the Lions forced the Mustangs to punt, Brownwood drove 67 yards in six plays for the game’s first touchdown capped by an 11-yard scoring run by sophomore running back Matthew Rodriguez for the 7-0 lead.
But Marble Falls answered on its next drive.
On third and 7, senior quarterback Colton Minor found junior running back Joaquin Aguilar on a wheel route for a 20-yard gain. Then Minor ran for 25 yards, 4 yards and 15 yards before handing the ball to Aguilar. The running back finished the drive with a 24-yard scamper to pay dirt to tie the game at 7-7. The drive covered 91 yards in eight plays.
On first down, Brownwood junior quarterback Judson Coalson threw an interception caught by Marble Falls senior defensive back Jackson Trudeau. Trudeau ran 34 yards for the touchdown and the 14-7 advantage.
The Mustangs attempted an onside kick but didn’t get it. Instead, the Lions drove 43 yards in five plays to tie the game at 14-14. Junior running back Levi Pearson shook off a tackler to run the remaining four yards to the end zone with 3 minutes and 41 seconds left in the opening stanza.
From there, it was all Brownwood.
The Lions forced Marble Falls to punt and took over at the Mustangs’ 30-yard line. Senior running back Noah Gonzalez scored on a four-yard run for a 21-14 advantage early in the second period.
Though the Mustangs recovered a Brownwood fumble on their own 32-yard line, Marble Falls punted. Then the Mustangs forced the Lions to turn the ball over on downs, but Marble Falls fumbled on the ensuing drive.
The Lions didn’t score again until the opening drive of the third quarter. They covered 63 yards in 13 plays in a drive that ended on a one-yard run by Gonzalez that took about half the period to finish to extend the lead to 28-14.
After a Marble Falls punt, Gonzalez scored on the next Brownwood drive. This one covered 39 yards in eight plays and ended on a five-yard run for a 35-14 lead with less than a minute left in the third quarter.
And though Brownwood fumbled after a Marble Falls punt, the Mustangs punted the ball back.
Pearson scored the final touchdown on a 23-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to cap a six-play, 83-yard drive.
Brownwood had 282 rushing yards on 41 carries led by Rodriguez’s 15 rushes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Pearson had eight carries for 84 yards and two scores and Gonzalez had three carries for 11 yards and three touchdowns, all unofficial.
