The Marble Falls High School boys golf team finished its fall schedule with plenty of positives.
In their own tournament, which was the final one this semester, the Mustangs shot a 293 in a single round to break the program record. The tournament was Oct. 25-26 at Hidden Falls Country Club at Meadowlakes.
Sophomore Camilo Montez shot a 4-under 68, the best score in a single round in school history.
Senior Porter Vinson shot a 3-under 69, which is the second best round in school history.
New head coach Adley Canales had a simple explanation for the results.
“They put in the extra time,” he said. “That was the goal.”
The tournament drew 25 teams with Lampasas being the only other District 24-4A member. Round Rock High won the tournament, while Austin Westlake was the runner-up and Austin High finished third.
Marble Falls had a two-day total of 609.
While that’s the score of the team’s last fall tournament, Canales noted the Mustangs have had a lot of success throughout the fall. They finished second at the tournament hosted by San Antonio Clark at The Dominion Sept. 30 and were led by Kolton Pannell, who finished tied for second in the individual standings.
On Oct. 8, the Mustangs finished as the runners-up at a tournament hosted by Salado at Mill Creek Country Club. Montez won the tournament.
The golfers will return to the links in February to begin its spring season.
While Canales is happy with the start to the season, the Mustangs recognize it’s about the finish and that means performing well enough at the district tournament in the spring to advance to the Class 4A Region III tournament.
“It matters at district,” he said. “They’ve been really good in the fall. They’ve been in good form. We just have to keep it up.”
