Faith Academy football beats San Marcos Academy in district opener

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team defeated San Marcos Academy 40-33 Oct. 25 to begin Division II, District 6 play of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
“We jumped on them in the first half,” Flames head coach Jay Silvers said. “In the second half, my offense only got the ball twice. We ended up with the ball last and ran out the clock.”
The Flames (3-6, 1-0), who led 28-12 at the intermission, got the ball with about three minutes left in the contest. They had a total of eight offensive possessions and scored on six. They had a fumble and turned the ball over on downs on the other two.
Silvers noted the Bears (2-6, 0-1) decided the best defense was an efficient offense.
“They were keeping the ball for a long time,” he said. “Our defense did a great job. (Junior) Adam Merlick had an (interception) and a fumble recovery for a touchdown that kept a two-possession lead before halftime.”
One big offensive key was Faith’s ability to get its ground attack going. Silvers noted the Bears decided they wouldn’t let the Flames pass the ball.
Junior Andrew Houy had 12 rushes for 172 yards, two touchdowns and completed 3 of 7 passes for 20 yards and two scores.
Freshman Landon Silvers had 10 carries for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore Wade Dillard caught an 11-yard touchdown and senior Karter Van Gundy had a seven-yard touchdown reception.
“They covered our receivers,” he said. “That opened up the run game. Drew and Landon did a good job.”
In addition to Merlick’s interception and fumble recovering for a touchdown, he also had six tackles, while Houy had 11 and Landon Silvers finished with three tackles and a sack.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Flames.
“We were efficient,” Silvers said. “We took what they gave us. We made quick adjustments. We were going to run it down their throats.”
The Flames travel to play at Bulverde Bracken at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.
