Burnet, Lampasas football to battle for first in district

The Burnet High School football team welcomes Lampasas at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Bulldog Field.

Both teams enter the contest after clinching playoff berths by winning their District 4-4A Division I openers last week. The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0) beat Marble Falls 43-7 and the Badgers defeated Brownwood 30-20.

Both squads return their starting quarterbacks from a year ago.

Lampasas senior quarterback Reed Jerome has completed 89 of 128 passes for 910 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions and has 84 rushes for 555 yards and nine scores to lead his squad.

Lampasas senior running back Daemian Rivas is the new featured back this season. He has 84 rushes for 483 yards and two scores, while junior K.J. Reed has 65 carries for 398 yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore Ty Johnson leads the Badgers in receiving thanks to catching 36 passes for 422 yards and six scores. Senior Haegan Oncken has 24 receptions for 344 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bulldogs will counter with senior linebacker Khris Kassner, who had 57 tackles, senior Alejandro Ochoa, who has 49 tackles and two fumble recoveries, and senior Noah Billock, who has 40 tackles and caused a fumble.

Burnet senior quarterback Rhett Murray has been solid in returning to his role. He has completed 97 of 175 passes for 1,172 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. Senior receiver Colt Stanford has 19 catches for 286 yards and two touchdowns and junior Matthew Williams has 18 receptions for 262 yards and a score.

Junior running back Josiah Coronado has 99 rushes for 619 yards and three touchdowns to lead the ground attack.

Senior Marcus Pimentel is the featured player in specific plays because he can throw, run and catch. He accounts for 320 all-purpose yards.

Burnet’s last win against Lampasas was a 42-7 victory Oct. 28, 2016. The Badgers went 1-9 and 0-5 that season. That was Troy Rodgers’ first year as the Lampasas head coach. Since then, the Badgers have a seven-game winning streak against the Bulldogs.
