Marble Falls football loses to Devine

The Marble Falls High School football team lost to Devine 28-27 Oct. 4 to finish its pre-district season.
The Mustangs (2-4) now prepare for the Burnet Bulldogs (4-2) in the District 4-4A Division I opener Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at home.
Down 21-13 at the half, Marble Falls received the ball to start the third quarter. Junior Joaquin Aguilar had a a big return. He was eventually tackled on the Devine 29-yard line. Two plays later, he caught a pass from senior quarterback Colton Minor and ran into the end zone from 29 yards out. Minor found senior receiver Kole Becker on the two-point pass that evened the score at 21-21 29 seconds into the second half.
On its first offensive play of the half, Devine was called for holding that put the War Horses (5-1) behind the chains. On fourth and two, they chose to attempt a fake punt the Mustangs stuffed.
Taking over at the Devine 28-yard line, Minor found senior tight end Noah Lyon and Becker on passes that reached the War Horses’ 11. But a dropped pass on first down and an incomplete pass in the end zone on third down resulted in a 25-yard field goal by junior Jett Marcum for a 24-21 lead with 6:26 left in the third stanza.
Devine’s second possession was promising until Lyon caught an interception.
And though the War Horses had back-to-back sacks, Minor hit Becker on a 35-yard pass to get to the Devine 25-yard line. Five plays later Aguilar scored, but a holding call took the points off the scoreboard. The drive ended when Marcum connected on a 23-yard field goal with 8:25 left in the contest.
Devine made a solid commitment to running the football on the next 15 plays that covered 69 yards. It ended on a two-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left in the contest that gave the War Horses a 28-27 advantage.
The War Horses recorded a sack on the game’s final play.
Devine began the game by covering 78 yards on about a 15-play drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown by senior running back Anthony Saldivar for a 7-0 lead. The drive took about 8 minutes.
Marble Falls responded with a nine-play, 81-yard drive that ended when Aguilar caught a two-yard pass from Minor. The extra point was good to tie the game at 7-7.
The War Horses’ next offensive possession ended with a 53-yard touchdown and a 14-7 advantage.
The Mustangs answered with an 82-yard drive that ended on a Minor scamper to pay dirt from 12 yards out. But the extra point was missed. The drive was highlighted by a 65-yard pass to junior receiver Kaden Langbein.
Devine scored on its final possession of the first half, going 68 yards in seven plays in a drive that ended on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 left in the second period.
As a team, the War Horses rushed for 216 yards and a touchdown led by Saldivar’s 22 carries for 131 yards and a score. Freshman Enoch Hall had 19 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Jacob Sollock completed 6 of 9 passes for 116 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Minor completed 17 of 23 passes for 270 yards and two scores. Becker caught seven passes for 109 yards, while Aguilar had three receptions for 59 yards and two scores.
As a team, Marble Falls had 16 carries for 17 yards.
Burnet is entering the district opener on a four-game winning streak after beating San Angelo Lake View 57-14.
