Burnet football takes on Gatesville
The Burnet High School football team will host Gatesville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.
The Bulldogs (2-2) will play with momentum after earning road wins against Fredericksburg 22-15 last week and against Little River Academy 49-35 Sept. 13.
It’s Burnet’s first home game since losing to Lago Vista 23-20 in the season opener Aug. 29.
“We’re looking forward to being back here after three weeks on the road,” head coach Ben Speer said.
And Speer believes the Hornets will pose another challenge for his Bulldogs.
“I think they’re a pretty good and solid team and very physical,” he said. “Offensively, they have the best athlete and best running back in Rayshon Smith.”
In two games, the senior ball carrier has 53 rushes for 428 yards and seven touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Gehrig Keeton has 331 passing yards with three scores and two interceptions in two games.
During 42-27 win against Taylor, the Hornets had 340 rushing yards and 121 passing yards. They were better against McGregor during their 35-13 victory: 303 rushing yards and 210 passing yards.
“They do a good job with their scheme,” Speer said. “They let their quarterback slash through anything. His quickness lets him take it to the house. We’re going to have to tackle by committee.”
Burnet will counter with seniors Lew Laidler, Khris Kassner. Alejandro Ochoa, Trenton Park and junior Riley Howell.
Speer noted the subvarsities have been playing very well. The Burnet Middle School football teams won all four games against Marble Falls last week and the junior varsity remains unbeaten despite the fact some of those players have been elevated to the varsity to offset injuries and depth.
