Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer is starting the 2024 season Saturday, Sept. 7, at Mustang Stadium on the Marble Falls High School campus.
These young Mustangs have been practicing for the season since mid July, before the high school players began their training camp.
In addition, the youth players participated in a scrimmage against Smithson Valley Aug. 24.
“We had so many teams go down there and match Smithson Valley,” sixth-grade coach Nicholas Wood said.
His squad enters the season as the defending champions. They welcome Lampasas in the season opener at 4:30 p.m.
“Obviously, we want to win the championship,” Wood said. “There’s no sugarcoating that. Everything is a process. Each week and each individual practice, we want them to make sure you’re doing the right things along the way.”
The team has 29 players, which “is a big deal,” he said.
“We have some really talented kids,” the coach said.
Quarterback Charles Wood has been working on the position for months and attended the Todd Dodge Quarterback and Receiver Camp.
During a recent practice, Wood threw the ball 25 yards to receiver Ayden Alexander, who leapt to make the catch at the right moment.
“He’s killing it,” the elder Wood said. “We have seven kids who weigh over 130 pounds.”
Receivers include Elijah Sanchez and Quincy Rodriguez, who attended receiver camps during the summer.
“We have a full house of awesome kids,” Nicholas Wood said. “We want more wins than losses and hopefully a championship. We’re getting all these new kids to love the sport.”
The young Mustangs participated in a youth football camp conducted by the Marble Falls High School staff July 29-Aug. 1, which was a week after they began preparations for the season.
“We spent that first week straight conditioning,” Wood said. “We slowly incorporated pads. We’ve been practicing the last few weeks. We’re trying to build them up.”
The youth football season tradition starts the weekend after the Labor Day holiday.
