The Marble Falls High School football team travels to play Jarrell at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.
Both teams are entering this contest after wins to open the season.
Marble Falls shut out Austin Crockett 56-0, while Jarrell came from behind to beat Giddings 20-14.
The Buffaloes raced to a 14-0 lead at the half. The first touchdown came after Giddings forced the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs. The second touchdown came on a short punt where the Buffaloes took over at the Jarrell 42-yard line and later recovered a fumble toward the end of the first quarter. The halftime deficit could have been worse, but the the Cougars (1-0) threw an interception on the Giddings 20-yard line.
Jarrell trimmed the deficit in second half thanks to some punishing defense and an offense that refused to be stopped.
Defensive back Noah Brindle took the ball away from a receiver when they were both in the end zone and then took a knee to give his offensive teammates better field position.
Jaysen Hobbs pushed his way 12 yards to the end zone for to put the Cougars on the board and trim the deficit to 14-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Then Jacob Crathers was wide open when he caught a pass from quarterback Jamari Livsey and ran 72 yards for the score. Crathers then ran 18 yards for the game-winning winning touchdown.
Jarrell features fast and athletic players for its multiple offense with different formations depending on what the defense is doing.
Marble Falls will counter with a speedy and aggressive defense unafraid to blitz from multiple spots and with enough speed and strength to make plays in the backfield. That resulted in Crockett suffering six turnovers with the Mustangs recovering three.
Offensively, the Mustangs will use a spread offense that’s unafraid to spread to run the ball thanks to junior quarterback Doak Timmerman and junior running back Joaquin Aguilar. Of the 317 yards of total offense, the Mustangs had 242 on the ground with seven touchdowns.
