No question the leader of Marble Falls High School middle-distance running is senior Tyler Hamblin.
Hambin has been the Mustangs’ most consistent runner for the last three years and helped the team win the 2022 District 24-4A championship. He has been a first team all-district selection and has competed at area, regional and state cross country and track and field meets throughout his time wearing the purple and gold.
And there’s little reason to believe those streaks will end during the 2024-25 school year.
As he’s gotten older, Hamblin has grown more serious about the sport. During the summer, he traveled to Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo., for its running camp July 21-26. The camp was recommended by retired Marble Falls High School cross country and middle-distance coach Chris Schrader.
“I spent a lot of time in the car,” Hamblin joked. “This was my second year going.”
Serious runners often attend running camps, clinics and other fitness-related programs in Colorado because of the Rocky Mountains and the altitude. The reason is because the altitude training can improve oxygen flow and tolerance to lactic acid while helping runners go longer without tiring.
Training in Colorado simply fueled his desire to be the best he can be.
“A lot of the college guys were super nice,” Hamblin said. “That was really empowering. It was really nice running with people my age and college runners.”
He also learned how to take care of his body before and after competing , the best ways to recover, the equipment and footwear.
“I learned now to turn off the quad and hamstring muscles,” he said. “Every fit is different and everybody’s body works differently.”
The son of Jennifer and Aaron Hamblin plans to major in mechanical engineering.
As he’s grown older and gotten better, Hamblin has found himself enjoying running more and more, so much so that accepting a running scholarship isn’t out of the question.
“I like the atmosphere of the college team workouts,” he said. “The schedules are nice.”
