The Marble Falls High School football team will welcome Austin Crockett for the 2024 season opener.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs are bracing to face a Cougar squad that had success a year ago.
The Cougars advanced to the playoffs last season and beat Waco University 14-13 for a bi-district title before losing to Montgomery Lake Creek 78-27.
But that Crockett team was led by dual-threat quarterback Cameron Dickey, who is now a member of the Texas Tech football team.
Still, Mustangs head coach Keri Timmerman noted that players who experience success one year want to keep it going the following year.
“I think they’re a team that is ready to come out and play a good Friday night game,” he said.
Crockett has changed its offense by adding more of a triple option scheme. Timmerman said coaches saw a Cougar unit committed to running the football, though he emphasized that doesn’t mean that’s all Crockett will do. The team has used two different quarterbacks during training camps.
“They spread the ball around,” he said. “They have two quarterbacks who are working within a new scheme. They’ve been about 70-30 run to pass. We’ll have a plan for both.”
Defensively, Crockett will be in a 3-3 stack with six players in the box. He noted the Cougars brought pressure from different positions all over the field.
“They have skill players on the backend who are athletic,” he said.
The key for the Mustangs will be to pick the moments when they decide to go deep and understand it may need a set-up play or two leading up to that.
Marble Falls has been learning Zimmerman’s version of the spread offense with a quarterback in the shotgun and a single running back or by himself. The Mustangs feature multiple receivers on each play. Senior Colton Minor and junior Doak Timmerman have split time at quarterback.
The players voted four teammates as their 2024 teams captains. They are seniors Kole Becker and Minor and juniors Raul Moran and Timmerman.
While winning his first game as the Mustangs head coach would be terrific, Timmerman said the team is concentrating on something else.
“We’re going to focus on trying to be 1-0,” he said. “Our theme for the week is 1-0. You don’t have to do anything special to go 1-0. We’re not concerned about game two or Saturday. It’s hard to win in Texas. You have to work really hard to do it and the kids have to work hard to do it.”
