Tryouts to make the Marble Falls High School volleyball program’s varsity team will be from 9-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5-6, at Max Copeland Gym.

After new head coach Christopher Pace selects the squad, the Lady Mustangs will undergo two-a-days before officially beginning the 2024 season in back-to-back home matches one week later.

Marble Falls welcomes Austin Northeast Monday, Aug. 12, and Kyle Lehman Tuesday, Aug. 13. Both matches start at 6:30 p.m.

“My limit is 12,” Pace said of the number of players on the varsity. “If you have more, it gets dicey with playing time.”

He is projecting at least 50 players in grades 9-12 will be part of the program with at least a handful who didn’t participate in the volleyball camp July 29-Aug. 1 because of scheduling conflicts.

With nine players who graduated a year ago and another who chose not to play, Pace sees more opportunities for new players on the varsity than difficulties. He spent the month of July in the gym with the Lady Mustangs as they did sport-specific drills. And he sees a lot of skill in the players. He truly believes they have the talent, desire, competitiveness and work ethic for a fantastic season.

“This is less of a rebuild and more of a retool,” he said. “There were junior varsity players (last year) who will be key contributors.”

Senior outside hitter Mia Trejo and junior defensive specialist Katherine McCary are returning lettermen.

“We only have four seniors who told me they’re trying out,” Pace said.

He anticipates around 20 freshmen and “a good group of sophomores.”

“We’re going to retool what our program looks like,” the coach said. “I have to put the best 12 I have on the court. This is exciting to us. They’re playing competitive games. I get to see what they’re capable of.”
