Burnet football attacking final days of strength & conditioning

With the start of fall training camp around the corner, the Burnet High School football program was bracing for a higher number of Bulldogs to attend the final days of summer strength and conditioning workouts.

“The last two weeks are really high in number,” head coach Ben Speer said. “We’ve had some who’ve been here all summer. We’ve had some who’ve been playing baseball or on vacation. We want to make sure they’re back and getting in the groove of things. You’ll see a sharp rise in numbers, especially those freshmen.”

Speer said he was pleased with the summer turnout, praising the players for getting their teammates to commit to coming.

“Our senior leadership has been doing well,” he said. “They’re holding kids accountable. Those guys will check in with each other and report back who’s where. Our senior leaders are teaching and holding their teammates accountable. They’re making our jobs easier.”

He pointed out athletes let their coaches know why they were missing sessions. Some may be on vacations or attending youth camps or playing on a select team.

“It’s also great to get away from each other,” he said.

Very little success happens without coaches committing to attending the workouts, too. Speer commended his staff members for showing up for the program, pointing out at least a dozen are ensuing the players are putting in their sweat equity.

“That to me is awesome,” he said. “You have to have guys who’ve been here. They’re excited about the possibilities. It’s a great environment.”

The Bulldogs will begin fall training camp Monday, Aug. 5. Speer believes they’re ready for the grind of the regular season.

“It’s been great,” he said. “They’re ready to rock and roll. It’s a great atmosphere right now. They’re excited, the kids are excited and the parents are as well. They’re ready.”
