Marble Falls volleyball player Bernard’s team finishes top 10 nationally
Marble Falls Independent School District volleyball player Brighton Bernard and her Austin Performance Club team finished ninth at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship recently.
The squad posted a 7-3 overall record in the patriot division of the event that had 109 teams.
Bernard, who will join the Marble Falls High School volleyball team this fall, said finishing in the top 10 takes focus, hard work, teamwork and “getting to know each other.”
“Being disciplined when you’re on the court,” she said.
Bernard, who’ll be a freshman this year, played club volleyball for the first time and is comfortable in any position, which is a plus for new head coach Christopher Pace. He is in his first year as a head coach.
“I play pretty much every spot,” she said. “It’s libero mainly. At nationals, I played right side (outside hitter).”
She picked up the sport five years ago and plays during the fall and when club season begins in late November. She also participates in track and field as a sprinter, hurdler and long jumper.
“I play club because I love playing volleyball,” she said. “I got to be exposed to different players and different teams. At club, we can play teams from all over. It was fun. I like playing a bunch of different teams.”
The club world is fast moving. Just two days after returning from the national tournament, Bernard was trying out for a spot on the Austin Performance Club squad.
The Lady Mustangs lost nine of their 13 varsity players to graduation.
