Marble Falls golf to conduct tryouts
The Marble Falls High School golf program will conduct closed tryouts for the 2024-25 season at 7:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday, July 31-Aug. 1, at Hidden Falls Country Club.
New head coach Adley Canales said only coaches and golfers will be present.
“(Former head coach Lonnie) Tackitt used to do them,” he said. “We’ve had some kids come out and want to join the golf program. We want to make it available to those middle school students who may not have been in golf before.”
The tryout will be conducted “like a normal golf tournament.”
“Coaches will monitor them,” Canales said. “There will be a group exchange of scorecards. You’re not keeping your own score; somebody else is. We’re trying to keep it how a normal golf tournament is ran: same playing field, same course, same everything.”
Right now coaches are projecting more than 25 golfers in the program with at least five and no more than 10 Lady Mustangs. The Mustangs vary between 12 and 20.
“Ideally, I’d love to fill out as as many teams as possible,” Canales said.
The golf program is constructing some incredible runs. Two years ago the Mustangs finished 10th at the Class 4A state tournament. Last year, they were third at the District 24-4A tournament.
“That (2023 season) was the fifth best golf season in school history with scoring and all the stats,” Canales said. “We still had a lot of success (in 2024). We had a really young team.”
As for the girls, Canales noted a handful of eighth graders did well.
The University Interscholastic League allows a total of eight tournaments leading up to the district tournament. Marble Falls is aiming to play four in the fall and four in the spring. The program will host the first tournament, which is Sept. 12, and the Mustang Classic, which is Oct. 25-26. Organizers are projecting 24 teams in that October event.
The coach said there are many pluses to playing a fall schedule.
“It allows us more opportunities to see things we need to correct,” he said. “Playing all eight in the spring, there’s a chance for burnout. If we’re playing eight straight weeks, there’s not much practice time. Tournaments are great, but you still need to get on the range.”
