Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer conducted its fitting day June 8 where families brought their player to First Baptist Church of Marble Falls to be fitted for jerseys, pads and helmets months before the start of the 2024 season.
“We had 104 sign up for tackle,” MFYFC president Joshua Henderson said. “That’s an outstanding number. That’s a little over 20 more than last year. Our fifth- and sixth-grade numbers are heavier.”
Officials are projecting five teams for the 2024 season.
Henderson and sixth-grade head coach Nicholas Wood spoke to different families of players in those grades to invite and encourage them to play.
“A lot are repeat players,” the president said. “That tells me we have good programs. We’ve picked up marketing a little bit and the Mustang brand.”
The association has been working closely with new Marble Falls Independent School District football head coach Keri Timmerman, who is sharing his philosophy and approach.
“Coach T is all about service,” Henderson said. “We have to serve the kids and help them grow. We have to get them to love it so much, so they play for 8-10 years. This year it’s let’s have some fun and let’s learn as much as we can.”
That came on the heels of the association finishing its flag football season where three champions were crowned. The concept was 5 on 5.
“We started it three years ago,” Henderson said. “We had amazing numbers for it. We had 180 and that probably includes cheer as well. It was a four-week program. It was a great year. Everyone had a blast. It was a very competitive year.”
In all, 16 teams were formed and coaches called a weekly practice and then games were played.
The association also plans to offer camps during the summer. Henderson said the types and dates and times will be released once they’ve been finalized. Visit the association’s web site to get current information.
“We have great volunteers,” the president said. “Our board has gotten bigger. Volunteer coaches have come out. We have a lot more commitments. We have the opportunity to do more. We can focus on what do we need to grow? Everyone puts in hours to make sure we have what we need.”
