The Highland Lakes Aces select volleyball program is hosting two camps in June.
The first is for incoming third-fifth graders from 10 a.m.-noon Monday-Wednesday, June 3-5. The camp is open to boys and girls who want to learn or improve on the fundamentals of the sport.
Aces head coach Erin Sawyer, who also serves as the Lady Flames head coach, is the camp director.
“This is for kids who want to learn volleyball,” she said, “how to pass, how to hit, how to serve.”
The other is the Junior High Camp for rising sixth-ninth grade girls from 9 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday, June 10-13.
“They’re learning fundamentals and doing a little bit more,” Sawyer said. “They’re reading more, diving into volleyball and how it works.”
Both camps are at The Fire Pit gym on the Faith Academy of Marble Falls campus. Each camp costs $95. Sign-up here.
To say that volleyball has meant a lot to Sawyer is an understatement.
She is a Van High School graduate and was on the squads that played at the state tournament in 1997 and 1998. She also played volleyball at East Texas Baptist University.
The sport was a big part of her life and contributed to some fantastic memories. Reaching the state tournament is why players work so hard in the offseason and put in extra reps with club teams or pickup matches. Those great moments are a reason why Sawyer is offering children a chance to get better at playing the sport.
“I’m trying to create a baseline and be apart of the summer programs,” she said. “Volleyball is getting mainstream and growing so fast. I don’t want those kids to miss out.”
