Former Marble Falls Independent School District football head coach and athletic director Brian Herman is joining the Georgetown High School staff.
Herman is the assistant head coach on head coach Chuck Griffin’s staff with an emphasis on offense coaching with running backs and track and field.
“The kids in Georgetown sold me,” Herman said. “It felt comfortable and natural. I’d been entertaining lots of places — head coach, play calling offensive coordinator positions. I was driving away from a head coaching interview when I got the call from Georgetown. God’s plans are greater than ours.”
Herman, who was the Mustangs’ head coach for five years, cited a slew of reasons why he and his family chose to go to Georgetown.
Top of the list is its proximity to family members in the Austin area. He has in-laws who live less than 15 minutes from the Georgetown High School campus and his daughter, Bella, is a student at the University of Texas at Austin.
Next are the opportunities for his son, Brody, a rising junior who’ll become a member of a successful athletic program and will continue to be challenged academically.
“They’re highly regarded with a great reputation in Texas,” Herman said. “There have been multiple college coaches who’ve come through to talk to me about Brody. There’s a lot of talent in Georgetown. Brody has the size. We want to get him on tape and put him on the field. They have such a great athletic program. It’s almost a dream come true. We’re going to keep the same systems in place. They have very interesting talent coming up. That sophomore class looks extremely talented.”
When Herman first walked into the football office, he saw a favorite saying that was written on countless Marble Falls apparel and signs.
“Hold the rope,” he said. “It was a theme they had from their 2022 championship run. There’s a sign for you. Ultimately when it all came down to it, all the boxes were checked by Georgetown. We like the size, and we love the location. Yes, I wanted to be a head coach. This is more of a family move. We’ve been very comfortable in central Texas. Most of our adult lives have been here.”
Griffin is the second high school head coach Herman has worked for, and he noted he isn’t the only new coach on the Georgetown offensive staff. Herman added that he had interviewed for several head coaching jobs and finished as the runner-up many times.
“There’s a lot of new faces coming on board,” he said. “It’s nice to have answers. I didn’t want to subject Brody to a rebuilding year that’s behind the 8 ball. We can walk into a ready-made product and contribute. Georgetown is ready to compete for district titles.
“It was an upgrade in every possible way,” he added. “Georgetown checked so many boxes. Every time I looked into something, I got positive results. They were all positive. Georgetown kept coming up every time.”
Joining the Georgetown staff also means the Hermans aren’t far from Marble Falls, a place the family has created life-long memories.
“We made some great friendships and amazing relationships in Marble Falls,” Herman said. “We’re only an hour away. We can stay connected to the church and the special (people here). We get to stay connected to a place we love.”
