The Burnet High School boys and girls track and field teams continued their march through Region III with outstanding performances at the District 23 and 24-4A area meet.
The meet was conducted April 10 at Lago Vista High School.
Lady Dawgs head coach Crystal Shipley noted nothing came easy at the area meet because of District 23-4A members China Springs, Gatesville, Waco Robinson, Salado, Waco Connally and Waco La Vega and District 24-4A members Georgetown Gateway, Jarrell, Lago Vista, Lampasas and Marble Falls. Burnet won all four titles of the District 24-4A championships last week.
The Bulldogs won the area championship with a total of 122 points. The Lago Vista Vikings were the runners-up with 104 points, and Lampasas finished third with 71 points.
Burnet earned six gold medals during the meet with junior Victor Aviles leading the way. The 2023 Class 4A state champion in the 800 meters finished first in that race at the area meet and added the area titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
Other area champions include junior Noah Crawford in the 100 meters and the Bulldogs’ 400-meter relay consisting of senior Grant Jones and juniors Khris Kassner, Colton Stanford and Crawford and the 800-meter relay team that included Brody Danson, Crawford, Jones and Stanford.
The Lady Dawgs finished seventh in the team standings paced by Asah Roy’s double bronze medals in the 800 and 1,600 meters.
“We are extremely proud of all of the athletes who participated this season,” Shipley said. “This group has been a blessing to watch as they have competed and grown as athletes.”
She was especially complimentary of the Lady Dawgs.
“Our girls always compete with a lot of grit and heart,” she said. “We are thankful for their hard work, sweat, laughs, tears, medals, personal records, school records and district championships.”
The Class 4A Region III meet is Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, at Bullard High School, 1426 S. Houston St. in Bullard.
