Marble Falls softball loses to Lago Vista

The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Lago Vista 13-11 March 26 in District 24-4A play.

The Lady Mustangs led 5-1 in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice flyball by junior second baseman Kylie Roberts “that turned into errors,” head coach Alex Lozoya said.

Marisol Ramos “got a big RBI.”

But the Lady Vikings answered right back in the second inning. A ball hit into the outfield rolled out of the Lady Mustangs’ glove that allowed Lago Vista to score. Then a home run ignited them. By the end, Lago Vista led 8-5.

“We couldn’t find the strike zone,” Lozoya said.

A change at pitcher allowed the Lady Mustangs (11-12, 0-4) to stay within striking distance.

“I think (junior Camille Catalfamo) did a good job the rest of the way,” Lozoya said.

Marble Falls kept chipping away at the deficit, scoring a run in the third inning then tying the contest at 9-9 in the fifth and 10-10 in the sixth.

Coaches saw some bright spots from the defense. Roberts caught a pop-up and looked to turn it into a double play and got to a grounder as she lost her footing. But she had the presence of mind and the arm strength to make a good throw to first on her knees. Freshman shortstop Jocelyn Suarez threw grounders to first base. Junior outfielder Cheyenne Thompson realized a ball was going to hit the wall and adjusted to limit the number of bases to Lago Vista.

“Kylie takes a lot of ownership on her defense,” Lozoya said. “She made plays look easier than they are. I thought we made some good plays. We have to take the opportunities to make plays when they are.”

The Easter holiday means the Lady Mustangs are back on the field at Burnet at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28.
