Marble Falls High School junior Kylie Roberts is the new program record holder in the shot put thanks to a heave of 37 feet and 11 inches at the Faith Academy of Marble Falls Relays March 23.
Roberts competed at the Faith meet because Burnet Bulldog Relay officials cancelled the field events of its meet March 21 because of weather, head coach Austin Silva said.
“We were then scrambling to find another meet she could compete in and luckily Faith Academy had an opening ,which turned out to be kind of a blessing in disguise,” he said, adding the record Roberts broke was a 30 years old.
In addition, Roberts had a mark of 116 feet in the discus.
“We are all very proud of Kylie for becoming the new shot put school record holder,” Silva said. “We are excited to see her peaking at the right time.”
At the Bulldog Relays, junior Tyler Hamblin won the 3,200 meters thanks to clocking 9 minutes and 41.32 seconds. Silva noted Hamblin’s performance comes a week after he posted the program’s second fastest time in the 1,600 meters at the Texas Distance Festival March 15-16.
“Tyler has done a tremendous job this year in the mile and two mile,” Silva said. “(He had) a big (personal record) last week in the mile at 4:23 and a convincing win in the two mile this week. (Distance) coach (Chris) Schrader and I knew if we could just keep him healthy, he would perform well, and he has all year. Excited to watch him as we get closer to district and beyond.”
Senior Nick Dahl took bronze in the 800 meters in 1:59.79.
“We are very proud of Nick for breaking that 2 minute mark in the 8,” Silva said. “He was ecstatic when we told him 1:59 shortly after his finish. We are certain that will only give him more confidence moving forward.”
Freshman Madison Cuplin continued showing her speed in the 100 meters, clocking 12.56 seconds to capture gold and helped the Lady Mustangs run for bronze in the 800-meter relay in 1:50.84 and fourth in the 400-meter relay in 51.89 seconds.
“With field events being canceled, Maddie really had no choice but to focus solely on her running, and that’s exactly what she did (by) setting a new (personal record) in the 100,” Silva said. “Very proud of her progression so far and her understanding of the patience required to excel in the 100.”
Marble Falls will compete at the Badger Relays Thursday, March 28.
“Ultimately, there’s nothing more encouraging as a coach than to see your athletes peaking and starting to figure it out at the right time and that’s what we are seeing,” Silva said. “We’ll have one more week to continue getting better, then (the District 24-4A meet) April 2.”
