The Burnet High School girls powerlifting season finished with two seniors and a sophomore competing with the top lifters in Texas at the state meet March 15 in Frisco.

Senior Abby Smith finished 13th in the 123-pound weight class thanks to a squat of 295 pounds, a bench press of 165 pounds, and a deadlift of 290 pounds for a total of 750 pounds.

“Abby cemented her legacy in Burnet powerlifting history, finishing her fourth state meet in her career,” head coach Tyler McIntosh said. “Abby finished her career with four trips to regionals, is a two-time regional champion, and has four state meet appearances.”

Senior Maddi Moise was 10th in the 165-pound weight class with a squat of 260 pounds, a bench press of 185 pounds, and a deadlift of 315 pounds for a total of 760 pounds.

“Maddi also ended her Burnet powerlifting career on a high note, finishing her second state meet,” the coach said. “Maddi has been a three-time regional qualifier, one-time regional champion, and has two state meet appearances.”

He summed up what the duo has meant to the program.

“These girls have set the foundation for our underclassmen, and we can’t thank them enough for all they have done for our program over the years,” he said.

Sophomore Halle Maxwell came in 10th in the 105-pound weight division with a squat of 200 pounds, a bench press of 110 pounds, and a deadlift of 210 pounds for a total of 520 pounds.

“Halle competed well in her first state meet appearance,” the coach said. “She tied multiple personal bests and battled to the end of the meet.”

McIntosh noted powerlifting is much like the other sports in Texas — great athletes who are performing extraordinary on the biggest stages with coaches who know how to help them compete at their very best.

“Despite the tough competition, our girls gave it their all,” he said. “While the outcome may not have been what we hoped for, we’re proud of their dedication and hard work. Coach (Zane) Hicks and myself are extremely proud of these girls. They earned every pound of their totals.”

Five senior Lady Dawgs were named academic all-state by the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association thanks to keeping a 92 or above grade point average.

Named to the elite team are Carleigh Imrie and Kimberly Watson, while Smith is on the first team, and Alexis Leatherwood and Moise are on the second team.
