The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Lampasas 2-1 March 5 in the District 24-4A opener for both teams.
The Badgers (1-0) scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. A batter reached on an error, another walked and another error was committed that allowed the runner to score after two outs.
“The big message,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said,” is that we play 15 district games. We have 14 more to go. We didn’t play our brand of baseball. A lot of it was that was the first varsity game. It’s a different environment. We’re on the road. We had freshmen in the lineup – kids who are learning how to do it. We have good freshmen who are learning more and more. It’s going to be good.”
The Mustangs (8-5, 0-1) tied the game thanks to a hit to right field by Sergio Hernandez after the Marble Falls reached base on a hit and a walk.
Senior pitcher Evan Nickowski (0-1) was credited with the loss. Both Lampasas runs were scored on pass balls with two outs where he and senior catcher Isaias Roman “got their signals crossed,” the coach said.
“And after each run, we got the third out on the next batter,” he said. “Nick pitched great. They had three walks and we had couple of errors. He had nine strikeouts.”
Lampasas pitcher J.T. Posten had 14 strikeouts.
“The kid did a good job,” Porter said. “He worked quickly and pounded the strike zone.”
The bus ride home was silent, the coach said.
“Quiet, which was good,” he said. “Because it hasn’t always been that way. We talked about turning the page. They’re adopting that mindset.”
Marble Falls finished the Del Valle tournament with a 2-2 record. The Mustangs beat Manor 15-2 and Del Valle 13-5 both on March 8 lost to Pflugerville Hendrickson 6-5 and Hays Consolidated 10-1 both on March 7.
Porter noted the setback to Hendrickson
“We didn’t pitch well,” he said. “We ran into tournament time limits. They got a couple of hits and a walk. It would have been a good win for us.”
Porter isn’t discouraged by the district contest outcome.
“I’ve seen everybody in our district,” he said. “I feel good about it.”
Marble Falls returns to district play this week. The Mustangs travel to face Georgetown Gateway at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, and host Lago Vista at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14.
