The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Fischer Canyon Lake 14-12 Feb. 20 in a contest that lasted three hours.

“We hit the ball really well,” Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya said. “Once we find a way to get out of our other activities, we’ll be fine. Honestly, it was a fun game to be at.”

Those “other activities” are errors that allow opponents to get extra at-bats and extend innings.

“There were 7 unearned runs between walks and errors that were bad timing,” Lozoya said. “We just can’t catch the breaks we need to finish the innings.”

Canyon Lake scored 3 runs in the first and second innings and then added a run in the third and fourth innings. Marble Falls (2-5-1) trailed 8-4 and 11-7 before plating four runs to tie the contest at 11-11.

“This group has been very resilient,” Lozoya said. “We settled down after the fourth inning. We had a rough start on defense, and we have to find a way. Canyon Lake put the ball in play a lot. They were very good and fast.”

He praised junior pitcher Camille Catalfamo, who threw all seven innings.

“Camille had more strikeouts than walks,” Lozoya said.

He also noted that freshman Jocelyn Suarez, sophomore Cheyenne Thompson, junior Kylie Roberts and Emma Cayce all played well, too.

“We made good plays all the way around,” the coach said. “Emma did a good job catching. We need for (the infield and outfield) to work. When they put the ball in play and (our pitcher) is getting the swings, I don’t think that should be pressure on our defense. It’s really hard to be the pitcher. If I’m in the infield, I’ll get two or three balls a game. A pitcher will throw over 100 pitches. I think the defense should want a chance to make a play. You don’t have to be perfect.”

Lozoya is very optimistic and encouraged by what he has witnessed. He believes it’s simply a matter of time before the Lady Mustangs put it all together.

“We need to zone in and focus up to finish,” he said. “We have to find ways to put it together. We made some good hits and some good plays. We have to find a way to make the routine plays.”

The Lady Mustangs will play in the Austin Independent School District tournament Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 22-24. The begin with Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy at 11 a.m. and Austin Eastside Memorial at 4:30 p.m. both on Thursday, Austin Crockett at 10 a.m., Austin Northeast at 11 a.m. and Austin McCallum at 3:35 p.m. all on Friday, and an opponent and time to be determined Saturday.
