The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team scorched Florence 10-0 Feb. 6 in District 25-4A play.

That’s the fourth consecutive shutout for the Lady Mustangs (4-0) this district season. They led 5-0 at the half.

Presley Kahl led with four goals followed Miley Bolanos with two and one apiece from Briseah Rivera, Ashley Ferreira, Suzena Perez and Haley France. Irie Wallace had three assists, while Madison Hardaway, Hannah Welch, Ferreira, Kahl and Perez each had one.

Head coach Abigail Blunt noted Florence is still constructing its program, so the Lady Mustangs were favored to win.

“Sometimes you see your team drop to that level,” she said. “There were some mistakes. But I think (my players) did well.”

While the district rules stipulate there’s a cap on the number of goals a team gets credit for in each match, Blunt was happy to see the Lady Mustangs put up multiple goals.

“Anytime you can put the ball in the net is a positive,” she said.

And equally important was keeping the Lady Buffs off the scoreboard. The coach noted the Lady Mustangs are incredibly committed to making it difficult on opponents to score. In soccer, coaches use a point system to award points for wins and ties. The district coaches also look at goals allowed, which is another data point if there is a tie in the district standings to determine playoff seedings.

“Getting scored on does make a difference,” she said. “We’re the only team in district that hasn’t been scored on. That is big. For us, putting up a zero was huge. Florence got two or three shots on goal. Keeping that zero was big. Our girls didn’t give up. It was constant.”

Marble Falls travels to face Jarrell Friday, Feb. 9. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. and the varsity follows at 6:30 p.m.
