Marble Falls boys soccer stomps Florence

The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team crushed Florence 13-1 Feb. 6 in District 25-4A play.

The Mustangs (11-2, 3-0) raced to a 6-0 lead by the intermission.

Esteban Dominguez, Edward Lopez and Ivan Espino led the way by scoring two goals apiece. Other goals were scored by Garrett Goggans, Drake Taylor, Kash Bussaraporn, Anderson Mazariegos, Aiden Walker, Charlie Brantley and Joaquin Aguilar.

Bussaraporn also had three assists, while Esteban had two. Other assists came from Angel Serna, Rigo Lopez, Seth Parker, Isaac Larranaga, Diego Mata, Edward Lopez, Mazariegos and Brantley.

“Florence is building a program,” Mustangs head coach Rick Hoover said. “When you go into a game like that, you have to focus. We need to play our style, our speed and our quickness. My biggest fear is playing down, and we didn’t do that.”

Hoover made it a point to substitute at the 20-minute mark of each half to give equal minutes to each Mustang.

“Everybody got a ton of playing time,” he said. “My backups scored six goals and my starters scored seven. There was no let-up, which is what I was going for. I wanted to make sure there was no let-up. We kept our chemistry going with our starters. Our bench got lots of minutes.”

Unlike most sports, soccer uses a point system to award points for wins and ties. And like other sports, there’s a cap for the number of goals scored in each match. So even though Marble Falls put up 13 goals, they won’t get credit for all of them. The other stat coaches look at is the number of goals allowed. The Buffaloes scored one on Marble Falls.

“There’s goal differential,” Hoover said. “That one goal can always come back to bite us. I don’t think it will. Shutting the other team out is more important than scoring. As long as beat (other district opponents), that point system won’t matter.”

Marble Falls welcomes Jarrell Friday, Feb. 9, to Mustang Stadium. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
