Burnet boys soccer stun Jarrell in district play
The Burnet High School boys soccer team defeated Jarrell 2-0 Jan. 30 in District 25-4A play.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-1 in the district standings and in third place.
After playing to a 0-0 first-half tie, the Bulldogs came alive in the second half, according to head coach Benjamin Boorman.
“The locker room at halftime was heated as the leaders of the team were ready to get back out on the field and take the game into their hands,” he said. “They did just that. The second half was dominated by the Bulldogs.”
After a number of shots that should have been converted, Dwight Lopez’s cross was met with a defender’s hand in the box, giving the Bulldogs a penalty kick. Hector Arredondo finished with confidence to give Burnet a 1-0 lead.
“Jarrell turned up the pressure after this goal,” Boorman said. “Just when it seemed the game was going to be tied up, Rigo Valdez was found on a long run.”
Valdez passed the ball to his captain, Miguel Valdez, who “split two defenders in the box with a jump spin and finished far post,” the coach said.
The Burnet junior varsity started the day with a 2-1 win. Sebastian Mendez scored both goals. The first was assisted on a cross by Luis Sanchez. The second was a well-placed-through ball from Alfredo Jaramillo. Goalie Roberto Montoya had a good game, Boorman said. Gustavo Vega-Palacios also had a good game, hustling from box to box to put pressure on the Cougars, the coach said.
Burnet returns to district play by visiting Lago Vista at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6.
