The Burnet High School girls basketball team beat Lampasas 49-38 Jan. 26 to remain undefeated in District 24-4A play.
The Lady Badgers (9-22, 2-4) led 9-8 after the first quarter. Burnet (25-6, 6-0) junior forward Sierra Schaeffer hit a huge 3-pointer in the second period to help ensure the game was tied at 19-19 at the half.
“We got into foul trouble early,” Gates said. “We weren’t shooting it well on the perimeter. We regrouped. Even though they were zoning us, we were working hard to get good solid shot attempts inside. The subs came in and did a great job of defending and didn’t allow the game to get away.”
Burnet seized control of the contest in the third quarter thanks to outscoring Lampasas 18-9 for a 37-28 advantage.
Senior center Zaria Solis led with 29 points, scoring 10 points in the third and 7 in the fourth quarters. Junior guard Sydney Lough dropped in 7, senior forward Alexis Leatherwood added 4, senior forward MaeSyn Gay and Schaefer each scored 3, and sophomore guard Journey Denton finished with 2.
Gates pointed out one big reason why the Lady Dawgs won is because they shared the ball and put the team’s goals ahead of personal goals.
“The team played unselfish,” he said. “We turned down some shots to get better shots. Zaria did a great job of finishing around the basket and hitting free throws. In the game against Marble Falls, Zaria had 3 points. We’re finding different ways to win.”
Observers called the Lady Dawgs’ performance gutsy. Gates agreed, noting junior guard Sydney Lough “locked in” and connected on two 3-pointers in the third period.
“I think that’s an accurate statement,” he said. “They hit a couple of 3-pointers off the glass. Obviously, we feel like we’re the better team. The scores were not bearing that out. We continued to play defense. This wasn’t going to be a 20 or 30-point victory. We relied on defense and getting the ball inside.”
Gates noted the atmosphere was great for high school athletes. Fans were into it and shared their energy.
“The gym was packed,” he said. “Sometimes you go in there and hope to get out with a win.”
Burnet travels to Wimberley Tuesday, Jan. 30, with the subvarsities playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
“I think it’s going to be good for us,” Gates said. “They do similar things to (district member) Jarrell. They play man-to-man (defense).”
