The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team defeated Georgetown Gateway 3-0 Jan. 26 in the second match of the District 25-4A campaign.

It’s the second shutout by the Lady Mustangs (2-0) in as many district contests.

Head coach Abigail Blunt noted the Lady Gators didn’t simply give up goals, pointing out that she liked her players’ decisions throughout the first half, even though the ball hadn’t found the back of the net.

“They’re a stingy team,” she said of Gateway. “They don’t roll over. That defense was so stingy. Congrats to them for that. We had the right ideas, but our touch was a little off. The ball was well defended by Gateway.”

Marble Falls led 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal by Madison Hardaway that came off a ricochet. Irie Wallace scored the next two goals thanks to assists from Miley Bolanos.

During the intermission, Blunt commended her players for how well they were reading the defense and where they were going with the ball.

“That team is stingy. Clean up your touch,” she recalled saying. “They cleaned up their touch in the second half.”

Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs defensive back line of Sachi Marcum, A.J. Doerr and Ava McNamara and goalie Mia Trejo also showed it was equally stingy in keeping a clean stat sheet.

“They played soundly,” Blunt said. “They handled it. They contained. Our team trusts more and more. It allowed us to be offensive. When your defense is doing their job, the offense can do what they do collectively. You can turn up your defense. Overall everyone did great.”

The coach was able to substitute and was pleased the intensity stayed high for 80 minutes.

“We have a lot of competition for spots,” she said. “We’re able to sub and do things. We know they’re going to keep their same level of play. That just means the next important game is the next game.”

That next match is at Austin Achieve Friday, Feb. 2. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity takes the pitch at 7 p.m.
