The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost to Jarrell 50-39 Jan. 26 to end the first round of District 24-4A play.
The Mustangs (2-3) are tied with Georgetown Gateway (2-3) for fourth place.
Marble Falls trailed Jarrell by 3 points at the end of the first period and 5 at the half.
The Cougars seized control of the game during the third stanza.
“We had a slow third quarter,” head coach Travis Crain said. “Jarrell took advantage of some of our miscues and turnovers. It wasn’t a ton of turnovers. It seemed like every time we turned it over, they scored almost every time. And they got and-1s (3-point plays). It stops momentum. When we turned it over, they were able to capitalize and convert almost every one.”
And then there was a Jarrell reserve, senior guard Diego Garcia, who scored four 3-pointers — two of them back to back — that flipped momentum when the Mustangs trimmed the deficit to a single digit. He finished with 14 points.
“They needed them,” Crain said.
Jarrell senior point guard Mason Dotson, who had been averaging about 25 points a game, dropped in 15, and senior post Carter Kammlah scored 7.
“To take a (59-38 loss against Burnet Jan. 23) and come back says a lot about our kids’ resiliency,” the coach said. “There are highs and lows and all the things that come within the season. I thought our kids were very resilient in our preparation (Jan. 24-25) and to refocus.”
Burnet (5-0) finishes the first round as the only undefeated team, while Jarrell (3-2) and Lampasas (3-2) are tied for second. Lago Vista (0-5) is currently sixth.
“There are a lot of worse places to be,” Crain said. “I’m ready to go back at it, and our kids are ready to go back it. We have three home games this round. Everything is a lesson you learn and you look at. We went to Lampasas and lost to them. We didn’t have the resiliency I’d like us to have. Our response was Georgetown Gateway (a 79-67 win). We put our blinders on and went to work. That was one of our best all-around team games. The kids played well — that showed growth.”
Marble Falls hosts Lampasas Tuesday, Jan. 30, with the junior varsity taking the court at 5 p.m., the freshmen at 6:30 p.m., and the varsity at 8 p.m.
“Now we have to go back up, pick yourself back up and go back at it,” Crain said. “We all collectively take stock of what we can do better. We’re like ‘all right. We’re going to get off the floor and move forward.’ I’m proud of our kids’ resiliency. They battled back and competed. That sets us up in the second round. I’m excited to go get it.”
