The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team defeated Lago Vista 45-33 Jan. 16 in the final game of the first round of District 24-4A play. The Lady Mustangs are on a three-game winning streak.
“Getting on a winning streak is always good, especially in district play,” head coach John Berkman said. “To finish the first round of district play with three wins is a big deal.”
Marble Falls (3-1) took an 8-2 lead thanks to buckets from sophomore center Leslie Reynoso and a steal and lay-up by junior forward Kylie Roberts on a trap she and junior guard Caitlynn Johnson set. Senior center Lexie Edwards added a bucket from the low block on a Roberts pass for a 10-3 advantage.
Lago Vista sophomore guard Scotlyn Stamos hit a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 10-7 going into the second period.
Edwards scored from the low block again for a 12-7 lead five seconds into the period. Stamos added a 3-pointer 3 minutes later to cut the deficit to 12-10.
That trigged a 9-4 run by the Lady Mustangs the rest of the half thanks to a reverse lay-up by Roberts, free throws by junior forward Bethany Fry, Edwards and Reynoso, a 3-point play by sophomore guard Rayleigh Crim, and a steal and score by Johnson for a 23-14 half-time advantage,
In the third quarter, Johnson found Roberts cutting to the basket. She was fouled as she scored the lay-up and added the free throw. That started a 7-2 run thanks to a bucket on the low block from Fry with a pass from junior guard Kenadie Cotton and a drive to the basket by Edwards from the free throw line for a 30-16 lead two minutes into the third period.
The two teams almost matched each other point for point with Marble Falls leading 37-22 going into the final quarter.
Lago Vista outscored Marble Falls 11-8 in the fourth period.
Berkman noted the Lady Mustangs’ runs spoke plenty about his squad. He pointed out Lago Vista was limited to one shot per possession thanks to Marble Falls clamping down on defense by rebounding, getting steals and deflections, and forcing Lago Vista into bad passes.
“We ran the floor well, better than we have in a long time,” he said. “We did a great job of not fouling. When they drove to the hole, we were good about getting out and getting in transition. That helped us.”
He noted seven Lady Mustangs scored led by Fry’s 12 points followed by Edwards with 10, Roberts added 7, Johnson and Reynoso each dropped in 5, and Cotton and Crim had 3. Roberts and Johnson also had 4 assists apiece and Roberts recorded 5 steals.
“Everybody doing a little bit helps everyone else,” Berkman said. “Everything runs through our posts. I’m really proud of them.”
The coach credited Reynoso for her rebounding. She led the team with 13 followed by Roberts with 10 and Edwards grabbed 9.
“Leslie rebounded really well,” he said. “That was huge.”
The Lady Mustangs will take a bye Friday, Jan. 19, then welcome Burnet (3-0) Tuesday, Jan. 23, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:30 p.m., and the freshmen at 8 p.m.
Berkman added the winning streak illustrates plenty about his players and their faith in the playbook.
“They believe in our process,” he said. “We’re a good team. They had to learn to be consistent. They became consistent at the right time.”
