Marble Falls girls basketball beats Lampasas

The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team stomped Lampasas 38-20 Jan. 13 for its second District 24-4A win.
“It’s a huge win for us,” head coach John Berkman said. “It gives us two games in a row that are two big district wins. We’re playing well right now.”
The Lady Mustangs (2-1) took a 9-4 lead after the first quarter behind the steady play of junior forward Bethany Fry, who scored seven points.
In the second period, junior forward Kylie Roberts took the scoring burden, dropping in five of the Lady Mustangs’ 9 points to help her team build an 18-9 advantage at the half.
The Lady Badgers outscored Marble Falls 8-4 in the third stanza though the Lady Mustangs led 22-17.
Marble Falls senior center Lexie Edwards took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of her team’s 16 points to ensure the lopsided victory. Edwards also was a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line.
Meanwhile the Lady Mustangs didn’t sway on their commitment to playing the lockdown defense Berkman and his staff emphasize. No Lady Badger was in double figures.
Marble Falls scored 14 field goals with Edwards, Fry and Roberts each scoring multiple times. Edwards finished with 15 points, followed by Fry with 9, Roberts added 8, and junior guard Caitlynn Johnson, sophomore guard Lila Pangborn and sophomore center Leslie Reynoso each added 2.
“We stuck with what we wanted to do,” Berkman said, noting his players showed resiliency in the fourth period after not being quite as dominant as coaches would have liked in the second and third periods
Still, he said, when the Lady Mustangs weren’t scoring the way they wanted, they clamped down defensively to ensure the opponent didn’t score either.
“Really our defense won the day,” he said. “We held them to single digits in all four quarters. We stuck to our game plan when shots weren’t falling. Our defense helped us stay in the lead and in control the whole game.”
In addition to Fry’s scoring in the first quarter, she also had the most rebounds in the first half. And Roberts and junior guard Kenadie Cotton set the defensive tone that energized their teammates, the coach added.
“Our five starters played well for us and played most of our minutes,” Berkman said. “Not one player stood out on her own. Everybody was doing her job.”
While Berkman noted that beating Lampasas came on the heels of defeating Jarrell 55-54 Jan. 9, there’s still plenty of basketball left to play.
“It’s always about going 1-0,” he said. “You have to play the game in front of you. You have to take care of that game in front of you. We have to lock in and be ready.”
Marble Falls welcomes Lago Vista Tuesday, Jan. 16. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:30 p.m., and the freshmen at 8 p.m.
The Lady Vikings (10-15, 0-2) lost to Jarrell 51-35.
