Marble Falls boys soccer crushes Canyon Lake
The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team stomped Fischer Canyon Lake 9-0 Jan. 9.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” head coach Rich Hoover said. “Canyon Lake tends to be good at everything. They’re one of those programs that are really good at everything.”
Esteban Dominguez and Garrett Goggans each scored three goals, while Kash Bussaratorn, Diego Mata and Seth Parker each scored one. Parker also had two assists as did Angel Meija, while Charlie Brantley, Ivan Espino, Bussaratorn and Mata each had one.
Hoover said he believes it’s good to have so many of the same Mustangs contribute to the scoring sheet.
“That’s what those kids in those positions are supposed to do,” he said.
Soccer matches have 40-minute halves. So at the 20-minute mark of each, Hoover substituted everyone except the goalie to give each unit 40 minutes of work.
“If we were losing, I wasn’t going to do the same thing,” he said. “I can influence a lot of things. One of the things I need to do is build my depth. Having them get good quality playing time is as important as winning in this particular part of the season.”
He noted that Parker is an all-state defender, while Meija is a quality reserve.
“I use (Parker) as an attacker when it comes to substitution patterns,” the coach said. “That’s why he was playing in an attack position, to build that depth.”
The Hawks are in District 26-4A, while the Mustangs are in District 25-4A. The two districts matchup in the first round of the playoffs. That was a reason why Hoover scheduled Canyon Lake.
“I wanted to play to have some sort of calibration,” he said. “At least that gives us something to compare to if we’re fortunate to make the playoffs and we’re matched up.”
The Mustangs play in the Round Rock Cedar Ridge Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 11-13, at 9 a.m. each day. They face Leander Rouse Thursday, Del Valle Friday and Cedar Ridge Saturday.
